The driver should develop several points of reference for each section of track to assist with consistent braking, turn-in and track out. The driver should stay ahead of the car with their eyes up and be able to verbalize what they are looking at before they arrive at the reference point. Target fixating also occurs when something goes wrong and a driver finds they are going off track or spinning. Instead of fixating on a tire wall or other off track barrier, look for openings and clear space to direct the car. Where the eyes go, the car will go.
The driver is able to keep a firm yet relaxed grip on the steering wheel at the 9 and 3 o'clock position and does not pass the steering wheel between their hands. The idea is to maintain consistent contact with the car's steering feedback and to be able to make instant steering corrections as necessary.
